Flexible energy management

Flexible energy management allows you to earn additional revenue with your company's electricity-consuming or -generating equipment through a virtual power plant platform. The VPP participates in the balancing market with its connected equipment, where electricity prices are more favourable than the usual Nord Pool exchange price in many hours. This enables the owner of the device to earn additional revenue even if the usual electricity exchange price is monitored or energy consumption is otherwise optimized. It does not affect the amount of energy consumed or the company's processes.

We always agree when and within what limits the load of your company's electrical equipment may be adjusted. If necessary, you can always change these times and limits via our web portal. The main controller that controls the work of your device, regularly querys the additional controller we have installed, to see if any activation orders have been received. If other parameters of the work process allow it, your device controller will make the switch based on the information received. The activation order is therefore not sent directly to your device. We thoroughly test the entire process to make sure it works correctly and safely on both sides before we start the service. As the electricity markets are traded 24/7, the service is constantly monitored and our experts are available when required.

The communication between your electrical device and the virtual power plant platform takes place over a secure VPN channel. On-site communication with the device takes place via a suitable industrial communication protocol (e.g. Modbus TCP). Our entire VPP solution complies with the ISO/IEC 27001:2017 information security standard.

The opportunity to earn is, on average, every third hour of every day of the week, regardless of whether it is peak hour, night or day. The Virtual Power Plant allows us to participate in the balancing market where the price depends on the hourly balance of electricity production and consumption. For example, if the wind blows weaker than forecast, the share of wind energy in the network will fall below the forecast level and there will be a shortage of electricity. As a result, there is a real-time need for additional electricity in the network and the price on the balancing market rises higher than the Nord Pool exchange price.

If our Virtual Power Plant has made an offer to the market for that hour, the system operator (Elering in Estonia) will send an order to the VPP to reduce the load of electricity for consuming equipment or increase the load of electricity for generating equipment.

The Virtual Power Plant forwards the order to the devices that are marked as available at that hour and their load is changed accordingly. In this way, the balance of the power network is restored by the VPP, and the owners of the equipment earn income by contributing to it. When the general network balance is restored, the devices switch to normal mode. If necessary, the same process is repeated the next hour.

Your electrical device must reach the specified capacity within 15 minutes of receiving the activation order.

Through the VPP operator portal, you can indicate at any time that your company's equipment will not be available for certain periods of time. The VPP platform automatically takes this into account when bidding to the market and sending activation orders to devices.

You do not have to be a customer of Enefit's other services to connect your company's device to our flexible energy management service and use it to earn additional income.

Enefit is in an equal position in the balancing market with any other company providing a similar service. Both Estonian and European Union laws and other regulations require that all market participants, both independent energy dealers (aggregators) as well as electricity sellers and producers, must be able to operate on an equal footing.
